Academic science
Published by admin March 4th, 2008 in Science, Physics, Doctors of PhilosophyCan independent science come out of this police state called academia? Members of the academic hierarchy must obey the laws of the system otherwise they will be excommunicated. Freeing science from the grip of this police state is important.
Academic scholasticism has been luring brilliant human beings into its ranks with a promise of turning them into a hero in the Newtonian mythology.1 After an investment of great deal of time and money our heroic candidate realizes that he or she has been fooled and turned into a bureaucrat. Academia is like the military. No soldier can question the hierarchy.
There is of course an option. Become an amateur. I realize how tough that must be. The stigma of failure.
Consider John Baez. He is a tenured professor. He was pushed out of physics for not playing by the rules. Sabine Hossenfelder of Perimeter Institute is burnt out consumed by crazy requirements of the academia because she dared to think and question the system.2 And Lubos Motl was fired from Harvard, I assume, for being too outspoken.
Any thoughts?
- Sean Carroll is a good example. He admits being fooled by Newtonian propaganda regarding Galileo: “Growing up as a young proto-scientist, I was always strongly anti-establishmentarian, looking forward to overthrowing the System as our generation’s new Galileo.” [↩]
- This series about her academic life is very revealing too. Congrats for being open and honest. [↩]
