Freedom of Science

Doctors are free content providers for the Big Media. They give away their intellectual property to the Big Media who packages them into ridiculously expensive journals and sells them to Universities where these Doctors work.

The method is familiar from Colonialism. The British colonialist bought raw material on the cheap and packaged it back to the colonized country with enormous profits.

Initially colonized people have no choice but to go along with this scheme because there is always a sector which profits by collaborating with the colonizer. Then colonized realize that they are exploited by the colonizer and they organize and fight to gain their freedom. This cycle has been repeated so many times in history that the British has the distinction of being the only nation who has their butt kicked out of so many places on Earth.

It is good to know that Doctors have reached the first phase of slowly becoming conscious that they have been exploited by the colonizing Big Media. There is a very good discussion at Secret Blogging Seminar which prompted this post.

I applaud the sincerity and openness of these mathematicians as they ask “Why do people still referee papers for Elsevier?” The original House of Elzevir published Galileo’s Two New Sciences. Galileo knew Elzevir and he smuggled his manuscript to Holland. In the seventeenth century, Holland was the “only country where there was freedom of speculation.”¹ But today Elsevier is a giant unhuman organism profiting by exploiting human science and hiding information from humans and profiting by selling what belongs to humans to humans.

The comments at Secret Blogging Seminar are very interesting as well. The consensus appears to be that these Doctors do not want to revolutionize the system by eliminating the Big Evil Publishers. Neither do they want to eliminate peer review. They just want a fairer system. This is understandable. Publishing papers in peer reviewed journals is the only way these Doctors can move up in the academic hierarchy. Consider that they have made an enormous investment of time and money to reach the point they have reached and this is just the lowest point!

What gets these doctors to the most coveted tenured positions are more papers published in “prestigious” journals (read Elsevier and other Big Evil Publishers) than their peers. Doctors have no choice but collaborate with the Big ugly publishers. It is a crooked and unfair system.

Therefore, to get tenure these doctors must give away their intellectual property to the Big Media. Effectively these Doctors work for the Big Media. They don’t have control on what they teach (textbooks are supplied to them by the Big Media), they don’t have what field to do research on (the Big Media decides the agenda by selecting what to publish) and they cannot move up the hierarchy unless they publish in the journals run by the Big Media. Effectively they are slaves. First as students and post-docs they are the slaves of the university. They are free labor. Then once they get their license to practice they become slaves of the Big Media.

Is it unfair to call these doctors slaves? I’d like to hear from them.

But their position which is, “let’s not change the system, let’s make it fair,” is the position of the slaves and colonials before the revolution. These collaborationists want to better their conditions without changing the system. They don’t mind being the indenturers of the Big Org. They don’t want to change the system. They are part of the system. They have invested heavily in the system. They want to stay in the system so that they can advance their careers.

This consciousness of the existence of the Big Evil Org that exploits them would not have occurred to the previous pre-Internet generations of doctors. But unfortunately as trailblazers this generation does not have the courage to be free. But the next generation will topple the Elseviers of the world and publish on the web as free human beings. Not only publish but collaborate. Yes. Collaborate. Doctors cannot collaborate because their culture is based on collecting authority points by feeding the Big Media.

In academic scholasticism it is not what a doctor contributes to human knowledge which gets him recognition but the authority points he collects by feeding the Big Org free material. In other words each doctor strives to brand himself as the genius of his generation. It is a system which favors branded humans who advance in the hierarchy by hiding  information. This is the old scholastic tradition which has its roots in medieval Europe. Apparently the freedom that they will gain by publishing freely on the web is not yet visible to the doctors.

But imagine how human understanding of mathematics would progress if Doctors of mathematics decided to collaborate as in this project.

I read Secret Blogging Seminar with great interest. This is a new phenomenon. If not these doctors I know the next generation will free themselves from the dominance of the Big Org.
