John Baez writes: “For people who think they can do fundamental physics without much math, the correct answer is not “no!” so much as “I doubt it, but go ahead and try.”¹

“You must use mathematics to do fundamental physics,” sounds like a good advice. It would have been even more helpful if it meant something.

John Baez knows what he understands by mathematics, fundamental and physics, but we don’t know what he means or if these words mean anything.²

Mathematics
Mathematics is notoriously undefined. No one knows what mathematics is.

Physics
Physics is a rubric under which Doctors of Philosophy collect codified version of their practice. There is only one definition of physics: physics is what physicists do.

So to do what physicists do you must use the legal language used by physicists. Previously the legal language of scholasticism was Latin. And the use of Latin as the language of science was strictly enforced to protect doctoral monopoly. Amateur Leonardo da Vinci could not get his notebooks published because he did not write in Latin.

Fundamental
As rational scientists we are not interested in an absolute concept such as fundamental. Science does not deal with absolutes, physics does. In physics fundamental is what physicists are studying at the moment.

Why do we need to use mathematics to study physics? Is there any other reason than to perpetuate the monopoly of doctors of philosophy on theoretical knowledge?

Physicists enforce mathematics as their Latin for the same reason the previous generation of doctors enforced Latin as the only language of science. What math is to modern scholasticism Latin was to classical scholasticism

Academic physicists who advocate the necessity to use mathematics to study nature always support it with Galileo’s saying that nature is a book written in the language of mathematics.

Why did Galileo had to use mathematics to study motion?

Mathematics allowed Galileo to eliminate polemical labels scholastic doctors invented in their theoretical study of motion.

In scholasticism the name of the game is standardization of labels. Doctors make their living by defining labels and marketing their labels as the true standard. This leads to the usual scholastic corruption of any subject touched by doctors.

In order to market and promote their branded labels doctors cheat like any other salesman of commodities. They doctor and corrupt in order to advance their careers.

Regulation

Therefore, every professional industry must use regulatory rules to curtail cheating of professional doctors. But Doctors of Philosophy are unique among professional classes because they do not have a constituency. No consumer needs the services of doctors of philosophy. That’s why society does not care to regulate physicists.

Without an independent outside authority regulating their corrupt industry physicists try to enforce their own self-regulatory rules. Note that these self-regulatory rules are invented for one purpose and for one purpose only: to effect a fair distribution of professional authority to every practitioner. It has nothing to do with science.

As expected, doctors cheat and corrupt their own self-regulatory rules by using the authority of self-regulatory rules they’ve corrupted.

Experiment, logic and mathematics are three self-regulatory rules sold as scientific method by doctors.

Experiment: Professional doctors notice that they routinely cheat on experiments to prove their doctrines. As the result any doctor who is not cheating to the maximum is cheated out of her career. Cheaters gain unfair advantage and advance faster. To give everyone a fair chance physicists institute a self-regulatory rule that every experiment must be duplicated to be called a proper experiment. But no academic experiment is ever duplicated, they enter physics canon on the authority of the experimenters, but cheating doctors claim that physics is an experimental science where every experiment is duplicated.

Logic: Left on their own, doctors will make mince meat of the rules of language. After all, these are the people who brought you the multisingle. So, doctors invent strict rules against corrupting and abusing language and they call this self-regulatory rule “logic.” And as expected they corrupt logic while claiming that what they do is logical. Physics is the great chain of the absurd but doctors claim that it is logically consistent!

Mathematics: There is no reason why a self-regulatory rule invented by professional doctors must be used to study nature. Doctors of physics invented mathematics as self-regulatory rule to eliminate their numerous labels so that they don’t cheat each other. In the process they corrupted mathematics into a context sensitive label mechanics. To Galileo geometry looked like a pristine language untouched by doctoral polemics but now mathematics is worse than scholastic Latin.

Legal physics is legal the rest is illegal

“You must use mathematics to do fundamental physics” really means “you must use legal physics to do physics.” It means that you must use what is legal in physics otherwise what you do will have no meaning in legal physics. In the eyes of scholastic doctors, what is not legal physics is not legal physics therefore is not science.

Since doctors of physics defined legal physics to be science they claim to be doing science. In other words, the professional practice of corrupting human reason doctors labeled as “science.” In order to free science from the irrationally effective grip of doctors of philosophy their hereditary authority must be transferred to the people. If hereditary authority could be demolished in politics it can be demolished in scholasticism as well.
