I was replying to Bee’s comment that one can do physics without time. I wrote “I agree with you that one can do physics without physics” and I realized that I wrote physics instead of time.

But how true!

Physics without physics is science.

Let me try to explain with an example from that discussion on the nature of time. Consider the concepts of Measurement and Definition on the one hand and Clock and Time on the other.

There is no scientific connection between Measurement and Definition. It is physics which makes possible the miracle of measuring physicists’ arbitrary definitions with a gadget.

There is no scientific connection between Clock and Time either. Again it is physics which makes the miracle of measuring time with an oscillator possible.

Am I really saying that physicists have been measuring with gadgets unmeasurable things like Soul? Is it really justified to suggest that physicists, who are known to be scientists, would measure unmeasurable things like time, cool and soul with oscillators?

There are several well-known examples of physicists measuring unmeasurable quantities to save Newton’s authority. Force is Newton’s Soul and it was never measured. The way they assigned an oscillator to be the vehicle measuring time, physicists assigned the torsion pendulum to be the vehicle measuring Newton’s Soul. Neither force nor its unit G have been measured in a scientific experiment. But physicists have been measuring force and G to extreme precision for centuries.

Unless there is a rigorous test which physicists use to test if time is a measurable quantity physicists’ clocks will remain nothing more than mystical objects producing physical miracles. 

But I got distracted. I was going to say that not only time, but there are in physics millions of concepts which can be removed without crippling physics. Physicists can do physics with most of the physics gone. Physics is made of independent namespaces with independent symbols. For instance, I am sure that no physicist is missing Coulomb’s experiment. If Coulomb’s experiment is removed from physics it will not be missed. No one will miss if Galileo is removed. Galileo is known today for his transformations. It is sad for Galileo that he did not know or name Galilean transformations. What about Newton? Most of physics is named after Newtonian stuff Newton knew nothing about. Can we eliminate Newton and still do physics? What do you think? Do you think this is a scary thought or is it a good thing?

Yes. One can do physics without physics. Physics is what makes physics alphysics. Physics without physics is physics without Newton and without Newton physics is Kepler. So you cannot remove Kepler from physics but you can, and must, remove Newton. It is going to take a long time but it will happen.
