Standard of Evidence

I like this concept of standard of evidence and I wonder if I could develop it as a criterion to evaluate physics.

What is standard of evidence?

Standard of evidence is a standard. Standard is a definition agreed upon by all parties. A definition when agreed upon by all parties becomes a standard.

In other words, when a definition has perfect symmetry it is called a standard.

When a definition has perfect symmetry an observer looking at the definition from his angle will report exactly the same definition as an observer looking at the definition from the opposite angle. This is true for all observers looking from any angle. The standard remains symmetrical in time as well.

When all parties agree to read a symbol only in one way and in no other way the symbol becomes a standard.

By definition, a standard is a symbol which is connected to only one other symbol. A multiply-connected symbol is not a standard.

Standard is another name for uniquely defined symbol.

standard = uniquely defined symbol

We see that once a definition becomes a standard the practitioners lose all authority over the definition. But the professional work of physicists consists of negotiating definitions to set them as standards, hopefully, a standard named after themselves.

The currency used by physicists to advance their career in the scholastic bureaucracy is authority. Therefore, in physics standards are serious business. You need authority to make definitions and you gain more authority when your definition becomes a standard.

It would be safe to say that in physics there are no uniquely defined symbols. This means that all physics symbols contain a cultural component in the form of authority.

Even the definition of physics itself is a multiply-defined polemical sophistry. Here is the standard view of evidence in physics:

“Empirical methods as employed in the ‘hard’ physical sciences, those focused on prediction, and which employ mathematics for modelling, and are generally thought capable of identifying causality relationships.”

So physics presents itself to the outside world as the empirical hard science which can be used as the definition of standard of evidence. Physics uses mathematics which is said to be another precise tool and by these methods physics is capable of identifying causality relationships.

But when you look at symbols used in physics you see that all symbols are multiply-defined definitions not standards. All symbols used by physicists are multiply-defined polemics which require the authority of physicists to have meaning.

If a symbol has only one unique value agreed upon by everybody then it is a standard.

Is there a standard of evidence in physics?

No. Not according to this definition.

Physicists reserve the right to multiply-define any symbol used in physics. The only constant in physics used to make definitions is authority. And no one knows how physicists define authority.

An example: in physics there is no standard definition of experiment. Every physicist has his own definition of what an experiment is.

Another example: in physics an equation is a multiply-defined polemical sophistry. Any equation can be read differently by any given physicist to fit his preferred doctrine. See the post about the equality sign.

To establish a standard of evidence in physics an outside authority is required. Only when academic physicists will give up their authority on physics that physics will finally become science.

Here there must be a caveat. Regarding the comment http://globalpioneering.com/wp02/natalie-jeremijenko-fan-club/ of Charlie Marcus about academic physics we must not generalize the methods used by academic theoretical physicists to applied physicists working in the academia. Academic physics includes not only theoretical physics, but also, applied physics. Maybe the analysis here should be confined to academic theoretical physics. But, I believe that the problem is endemic in the entire physics. More discussion is needed here.
