Newton claimed that his Principia was about “rational mechanics.” It may be the one and only rational mechanics book starting with poetry. That famous piece of doggerel is part of sophisticated marketing methods Newton used to establish his Principia as the Book of Newtonism. Newton’s marketing campaign was so successful that Newton brand remains the most recognizable brand ever created.

Newton explicitly stated that he modeled his Principia after his definition of scientific method.¹ Newton pretended that in Principia he rigorously proved the Newtonian occult according to which celestial bodies supposedly attract each other to form the observed orbits. Newton claimed to achieve such a feat by using his new mathematical method as elaborated in his Principia. Newtonian propaganda goes like this:

1. State Newton’s laws of motion

2. Enunciate and prove theorems of motion in Book I

3. In Book III state astronomical phenomena and apply the theorems that was supposedly proved in Book I to explain the stated astronomical phenomena.

4. Confirm that the Newtonian theory of universal gravity explains all phenomena, from the motion of the falling stone to the orbits of the moon and planets and beyond.

The only purpose of Book II unmentioned above is to separate Books I and III. Newton dumped in Book II whatever propositions he could find on his desk including one about how to design a ship–luckily not used by any shipyard so far.

This has been the marketing plan for the Principia and Newton successfully sold his scholastic treatise to the world as the greatest science book ever written.

The reality is different.

Newton’s laws are neither laws nor Newton’s. Newton’s laws are definitions Newton stole from Descartes, Galileo, Huygens and Kepler.

Ninety per cent of Principia is polemical philosophy expressed in the language of geometry. Newton’s main method of proof is proof by authority. Newton’s geometry is sophistry full of rendered pictures symbolizing Newton’s occult labels.

The claim that in Book III Newton applies a “Newton’s theory of gravitation” to make astronomical calculations is nothing more than Newtonian propaganda.
