These are not two different groups of people working in different professions. The profession is the same. String theorists are academic physicists. All academic physicists are Doctors of Philosophy. All Doctors of Philosophy who call themselves physicists are priests of Newtonist religion.
String Theory is a different sect, or a cult, depending on your point of view, in the scholastic religion.
